It seems to be reliable. Having used it since Hotmail shut down, I have not experienced any problems.

When I used it I had no reliability issues. Spam filtering kinda sucked.

I don't know that I've ever had reliability issues with Outlook, but I've occasionally reacted like this or like this when confronted with their decisions that affect security:

While other services allow for at least 20 character passwords, Outlook caps theirs at 16.

And when they came out with their alias feature a few years back, I was hoping it would be like most other services where users would be able to set things up so that only aliases would be used for actual sending & receiving of email while the account address would be otherwise unused/unknown and only used for logins. I also thought it would put my mind at ease considering their rather short password limit mentioned above. But Outlook announced that their aliases could all be used for alternative login usernames! So they blew that chance of enhancing their security at least a little bit, as far as I'm concerned.

Their alias scheme reduced security instead.

It still seems lame, esp when forwarding from Fastmail, may be things will improve on the office 365 infrastructure.

Very reliable, if you compare this to office 365 exchange hosting hardly any down time.

I think of it as being "good enough" as far as free service goes.

Somehow their web interface manages to be very CPU intensive in my experience. I mean loading Outlook.com can nearly max out a two- or four-core Haswell chip for an extended period of time. And it's only an inbox! I even disable some scripts and it's still that bad.
