OK - What's best email client for FastMail.fm imap not free ~ $30 to $50 to ?

Really interested to know opinions!
IMO, Mulberry is best - with Becky! as a close second. Becky! won't do if you need to be able to synch folders, though, and it has other shortcomings as well. But is also has some outstanding gems in the way it handles IMAP. First and foremost, how it deals with caching of messages. On top of that it has one of the most incredibly well thought out interfaces I have ever seen on any piece of software - but some of the wisdom is quite hidden!

Mulberry, OTH, is completely dedicated to the IMAP-protocol and that alone could compensate a great deal for any lack in interface-elegance, IMO. For instance, the newest beta introduces eight customizable IMAP-labels.

In the few days I have had to try it out I have been impressed with Thunderbird, and with even less time spent on Mulberry it also looks promising although I'm bitterly disappointed that it has no native proxy or socks support, which makes it that much harder to use behind many layers of security in an office environment.

Regards, AB

Tough question!

Although I've never tried Mulberry or Becky (never heard of this one till today). On the paying level I've given PocoMail3 a spin and it's improved it's IMAP capabilities. I like it especially for it's speed and low usage of my PC's resources. They also have a user forum which I think is always nice to have with good interaction.

On the free level, I've come to appreciate OE which I find still very good even if it does use a bit of your PC's energies.
Mozilla's Mail client is good too and Mozillazine's or Mozilla's forums are good places to find help.
Others are simply not rendering IMAP yet, although I still hope Pegasus will soon.

I agree that Mulberry is the most sophisticated IMAP client available, but every time I've tried it I've found it a little confusing. I haven't tried Becky with IMAP but it has one feature I've never seen anywhere else: the thread-repair tool. Very cool feature.

Pegasus does IMAP

Hi janniklindquist,

Pegasus does IMAP4 - c'est la même chose? Is that the same as IMAP?

IMAP4

I remembered reading that IMAP4 was a different protocol and so I made the assumption that it wasn't IMAP. Guess I'll have to re-visit Pegasus!

I like PC-Pine. If you don't need an offline capability, and you're not obsessed with eye-candy then it's a pretty good client.
  • it's about the fastest imap client around because of it's efficient use of imap
  • if you use it from more than one site you can upload your address-books and the core of you configuration to an imap server (note, not acap), and yet still overide and extend this locally
  • It renders HTML into formated text, so you can read mail from shallow people without the risk of webbugs and viruses
  • pine's roles are the most powerful version of personalities around
  • the from address can be freely edited on the compose screen, it's surprizing how few clients allow this
  • it handles broken imap connections gracefully - you just re-open the mailbox (some clients can get really confused when a imap connection is lost at the wrong time)
  • it's stable, and lightweight
  • it's main deficiencies are in mail-checking which is handled well by fastcheck

Indeed; last night, in a particular ly intensive session, among other things (including getting the latest WZebra, a freeware Reversi program which is the strongest I've come across) I downloaded PMail version 4.12a (the latest), installed it to my pen-drive, and downloaded my entire mailbox contents as a backup — I couldn't have done the latter (I'd have been restricted to the Inbox only) without IMAP.

(The above of course was early evening UK time, before the FM downtime I'm going to read about once I've posted this.)
