Best AND free seems to be mutually exclusive lately. Free, by definition must have some limitations, so the owners can afford to offer it.
Best, if there is anything like that, costs substantial money to maintain, and cannot be free. We got used in the last couple of years to get everything for free on the internet, so paying for anything brings about resentment. I would suggest the following: Look for affordable, fast and reliable service, with staff committed to good service, ongoing development and good business management. (Fastmail.fm comes to mind). Email recommedations
Fast and Free is hard to come by nowadays. FastMail and Oddpost are good ones. I like Hyperoffice as well with their 20m of storage for the account.
