Why is [Compose] an orphan?

Why is the compose button in the new interface positioned above the folder list and not in the blue button bar at the top?

Why is it orphaned?

Answer #1: why not?
Answer #2: because it does not belong to the category of other buttons in the bar at the top.
Answer #3: ................................... write your own reason, using as many words as you wish

The classic interface has [Compose] in the bar at the top.

If you hide the sidebar the compose button is at the top right.

I agree. It is odd, especially when the Address Book has 'New Contact', Calendar has 'New Event', Notes has 'New Note'. The Files tab is still the old school stuff.

Also, IMHO, the saved searches, which is a convenient feature, is stuck at the bottom of the folders, which is not convenient. They should be available in a drop-down list where the search field is, not taking up any more real estate, (In fact less depending how many saved searches you have)

Yes, but the new interface is (supposed to be) better

I have never done that - how very odd - to have [Compose] skip across the screen.

It does seem like the Compose button would be best in the top blue bar, to the left of Archive. Plenty of wasted horizontal space in that bar. Then we'd have Compose/Archive/Delete as the first three buttons, very nice. Also gives more vertical space for your list of folders.

Perhaps on narrow screens like mobile phones that extra button wouldn't fit.

It's very tight on my 11.5" Chromebook screen. I use the Big Font style, nevertheless at the browser zoom I currently use to get readable text in the message pane, the font size of the top bar is too big. "Archive" I never use. Move to is lacking a Copy to option. Cant help thinking one of those buttons should be a "More" drop down. Perhaps when the top bar is used up extra buttons could be collected into a drop down as happens in the Chrome shortcut bar. Better still would be a configurable menu bar.

Although the new interface has many advantages, on balance I prefer the classic.

You're right. It does. Now that never occurred to me!

But not Outlook.com where the menu bar is context sensitive.
