Windows XP Question - Uninstalling MSN Messenger
How do I uninstall MSN Messenger from XP?
Since I don't see it in Add/Remove programs, I really hope they didn't embed it into the XP Operating system. What's really getting on my nerves is that each time I open MSN messenger, it appears in my startup mode, even though I've done a run, msconfig to uncheck that box, it keeps returning to system startup by default. I'd really prefer to get this thing off my system. Anyway to remove MSN Messenger from XP? |

Additional Info:
I found out what's happening. If I take it out of startup by run, msconfig, it's removed.
However, every time MSN Messneger is clicked on, it automatically puts it back into the startup configuration. And what's worse, a prompt comes up to ask me about connecting an MSN Passport to my XP account. I'd like to just remove MSN Messenger from my system. In Add/Remove programs, I see: "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" Questions Is this it? Or a combinations things. Is it safe to remove "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" ? |

No, Messenger is not the .NET Framework. Some applications depend on the .NET Framework (And I expect more and more will, over time) to run, but if you don't run any apps it's quite safe to remove.

It's like a virus, I know. For myself I did unstall it, but then my daughter went and put it back!

Actually, I used this method:

In it this article: Can I uninstall Windows Messenger in Windows XP? it states that uninstalling is not recommended and they recommend disabling it via a different method. I went ahead and uninstalled it using the "Add/Remove" / "Add/Remove Windows Components" in the control panel. Is this going to harm my system in any way? Note: I use Internet Explorer Browser I do not use: 1) Outlook Express 2) Other MSN products etc. Also, I'm considering downloading the MSN Messenger separately at a later time. Another option is to just download trillian and use MSN Messenger through that instead. |
