Full PGP support now
As of July, ProtonMail is (finally) fully interoperable with other PGP mail clients.
You can export your ProtonMail public key to non-ProtonMail contacts, so they can send you encrypted mail using their client of choice. You can import their public PGP key, so you can send them encrypted mail. Once that's done, email encryption can be automatic between the two of you with only the one party using ProtonMail. They have a public key server, so an external user's client can automatically look up the key of any ProtonMail address. https://protonmail.com/blog/address-verification-pgp-support https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/how-to-use-pgp |

From the PM blog post above:
The beauty of email is that it is federated, meaning that anybody can implement it. It is not controlled by any single entity, it is not centralized, and there is not a single point of failure. While this does constrain email in many ways, it has also made email the most widespread and most successful communication system ever devised. PGP, because it is built on top of email, is therefore also a federated encryption system. Unlike other encrypted communications systems, such as Signal or Telegram, PGP doesn’t belong to anybody, there is no single central server, and you aren’t forced to use one service over another. We believe encrypted communications should be open and not a walled garden. ProtonMail is now interoperable with practically ANY other past, present, or future email system that supports the OpenPGP standard, and our implementation of this standard is also itself open source. |

ProtonMail email hacker arrested. I wonder if using a service like ProtonMail increases your security threats in some ways simply because you are telling the world you have communications worth hiding, legal or illegal? In other words, it is like the old advice, when walking in a bad neighborhood don't wear flashy clothes and a Rolex watch.

Two Apophis Squad members caught now.
On Feb. 12, the U.S. Justice Department announced the arrest of Timothy Dalton Vaughn, a 20-year-old from Winston-Salem, N.C. Vaughn is alleged to have been a key member of the Apophis Squad, a gang of ne’er-do-wells who made bomb threats against thousands of schools and launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Web sites — including KrebsOnSecurity on multiple occasions. Protonmail later publicly thanked KrebsOnSecurity for helping to bring about the arrest of Apophis Squad leader George Duke-Cohan — a.k.a. “opt1cz,” “7R1D3n7,” and “Pl3xl3t,” — a 19-year-old from the United Kingdom who was convicted in December 2018 and sentenced to three years in prison. But the real-life identity of HDGZero remained a mystery to both of us, as there was little publicly available information at the time connecting that moniker to anyone. |
