@Pete if you're still reading this thread: apologies for all my earlier frustration. The idea of NSA goon/Thought Police intervention crossed my mind, but only briefly as a conspiracy theory fantasy. That it's actually the case is downright terrifying.
I can't imagine the pressure Ladar was under, and have the utmost respect for his bravery and decision, despite how it inconvenienced me. I have no interest in a refund, and will donate what I can to the legal fund. To all the other Lavabit users in this thread: see you in the advanced screening line at any US airport for the foreseeable future I guess. How have we allowed our beautiful nation get to this point? Must it get even worse before it gets better? |

It seems like an immature response to say "what were you guys hiding that required so much security?". It's also rather ignorant and rude of you to assume that everyone else must comply with your perceived level of "acceptable" privacy. Like you somehow know why people were wanting security. People used Lavabit because they didn't want to be tracked or have their email sifted through and cataloged in a big, nebulous database. When Lavabit was first started, all of that was purely in the realm of theory and conspiracy. It was purely speculated on by the same people who believed Echelon was still in operation. Now that we know it's true, your only response is "well what are you hiding anyway"? He's right, if you specifically know that they are spying on you and they are interested in what you are doing, why don't you put a camera in your house? Why not put a camera pointing at your neighbor's house as well? Why even use an email service? Just have anyone who wants to speak to you tweet their message to you. Why even use secure communication for your email? Or any browsing really? It's not like you have anything to hide from the world, right? Last edited by Beetix : 9 Aug 2013 at 03:17 PM. |

Thanks to Pete for doing the best under the circumstance.
Ladar, so if I get it you where not allowed to tell people to back up in case the data transfer gets wrong or take time? Would that really be illegal? Maybe I am naive. But if it is that bad I guess they can do whatever they want because you fighted back so we will never know? |

How do you trust the compiler? Technically, the compiler will also be open source. So technically it is possible to check every step of the way. I am talking about all this on Linux of course. |

To Pete and Ladar,
If you are still reading this thread, please provide a way for Lavabit members to contact you, apart from the donation link (which I plan to keep using). As far as I'm concerned, Lavabit is a community, and this legal battle should be fought with support from the community and not only by Ladar. You're not alone in your ethical stand! Financial donations are important, but the full support of the Lavabit community should be more important still. All the best, MVE |

Lavabit is using PayPal for donations? That seems like a really bad idea.
