I see quite a few, but I'm sure I'm missing many. Here are the first two letters of the band names I quickly see (going from left to right). I am leaving off leading words such as "The ...".

Can I type the ones I recognise, or should I PM you in order to not spoil it for other forum members? Or shall we try to each contribute in order to solve the puzzle together?

I can see about 6 or 7 bands (maybe 8 if solo performers are to be included). So I fear I'm not scoring that well.

OK, from left to right in circle shape (starting on the left side):

Guns N Roses
Led Zeppelin
Gorillaz
Rolling Stones (the two giant rocks seem to roll over the street)
(The) Eagles
Garbage (the litter bin that fell over)
Scissor Sisters
Smashing Pumpkins
Alice in Chains
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nine Inch Nails (on the floor to the left of number 20)
Queen

if solo artists can be counted in: Prince (at least it looks like a prince talking to the queen, or is it a knight?)

I'm a bit puzzled over the other people, the other eatables, the airplanes, and the dollar coin ... in the picture

I worked hard on my list and now include links to YouTube examples of the music of each band, using ideas from others and a lot of web searches. There is more than one version of this image -- other versions include a few more clues off the left edge of the image you posted from Wayback Machine (captured over 12 years ago).
  1. White Zombie (left edge in white with blood splashes)
  2. Seal (behind the zombie's shoulder
  3. Under the Streetlamp (right of the seal poster, or many other bands with similar names such as Streetlight Manifesto)
  4. Dead Kennedys (below streetlamp)
  5. Madonna (right of the dead presidents poster)
  6. Dresden Dolls (right of Madonna) - There is only one doll or mannequin, so I'm not sure if this is correct.
  7. The Postal Service (below Madonna)
  8. Cornershop (SHOP sign between Madonna and Whitesnake)
  9. Yellowman (below SHOP sign)
  10. Great White (mouth open at top of image, immediately right of Yellowman)
  11. Guns N' Roses (cart with flowers and guns in lower left of page)
  12. 311 (cart has 3 rose vases and 11 guns)
  13. Azealia Banks (yellow azalea flowers on cart)
  14. 50 Cent (shiny coin to the right of Guns N' Roses cart)
  15. The Roots (below 50 Cent)
  16. Dinosaur Jr. (below roots)
  17. The Angels or The Fairies or The Pixies (flying creatures around the Virgin Digital sign)
  18. Platinum Blonde (with bubblegum, above Virgin Digital sign)
  19. Led Zeppelin (right of Blonde Pig)
  20. Whitesnake (below Led Zeppelin)
  21. Kiss (below the snake)
  22. The Doors (colored panels shaped like doors to the right of Kiss)
  23. The Cult or The Choirboys (in white robes to the right of doors)
  24. The Killers (below right of The Cult)
  25. Queen (right of cart)
  26. Sex Pistols (in queen's hands)
  27. Eels (below Sex Pistols)
  28. Prince (to the right of Eels)
  29. Radiohead (above Prince - guy with radio for a head)
  30. The Cars (behind Radiohead)
  31. Iron Maiden (right of The Cult)
  32. The Police (right of Iron Maiden)
  33. The Rolling Stones (very large, behind the police and further to the right)
  34. Deep Purple (building behind left rolling stone)
  35. Gorillaz (one is behind the deep purple building)
  36. Cypress Hill (right of gorilla, above right of deep purple building)
  37. The B-52's (above cypress hill)
  38. Pink (sky color)
  39. Twisted Sister (right of radio head guy)
  40. The Go-Go's (right of twisted sisters)
  41. Black Flag (above Go-Go's on building)
  42. The Carpenters (three guys above and right of Black Flag)
  43. Crowded House (visible in window below carpenters)
  44. U2 (two u's below crowded house)
  45. BeeGees (BGG written vertically below U2)
  46. Talking Heads (in window below U2)
  47. The Eagles (in the foreground above the crowded house windows)
  48. Spoon (at the far right below the eagles)
  49. The Beach Boys (carrying beach boards to the left of Spoon)
  50. Bloc Party (above Beach Boys)
  51. MainStreet (MAIN street sign to the left of beach boys)
  52. The Black Crowes (perched on MAIN street sign)
  53. Cowboy Junkies (left of Main street sign pole)
  54. Jane's Addiction (with Cowboy Junkies)
  55. Garbage (knocked over to the left of cowboys)
  56. White Stripes (on street adjacent to garbage)
  57. Hole (above garbage)
  58. Ratt (below garbage)
  59. Scissor Sisters (below Ratt)
  60. The Smashing Pumpkins (right of scissor sisters)
  61. Eminem (spilled M&M's below scissor sisters)
  62. Nine Inch Nails (below left from the M&M's)
  63. Matchbox Twenty (below right from Nine Inch Nails)
  64. Phish (right of Matchbox Twenty)
  65. Jewel (right of Phish)
  66. Black Velvet song (jewels are inside the black velvet lined open box)
  67. The Cranberries (right of black velvet)
  68. Green Day (marked on calendar right of cranberry cases - note that this calendar shows 19 August 2006 as the first day of that week - in reality that was a Saturday. ISO 8601 sets Monday as the first day of each week, while in the US it's normally Sunday.)
  69. Red Hot Chili Peppers (above the green day calendar)
  70. The Lemonheads (right of chili peppers and also left of Korn, with smiley faces)
  71. Blind Melon (with sunglasses, adjacent to chili peppers)
  72. Korn (left of Blind Melon)
  73. The Butternut Squash Band (above Blind Melon)
  74. Alice in Chains (above squash)
  75. Blur (right of Alice)
  76. The Subways (underground behind Alice and Blur)
  77. And of course, Pavement is easily visible.

Some great bands in there...

Garbage...

Green Day...
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while... (such emotional line, from a very beautiful saudade song)

Radiohead
For a minute there, I lost myself... I lost myself... (no matter how little sense the rest of the song's lyrics make, that line has such a beautiful melancholy and sadness in it that it keeps repeating itself in my head for the last couple of weeks now)

Dresden Dolls Love them! But are they still in existance or is Amanda Palmer now on the solo path without time left for the band?

Led Zeppelin

Scissor Sisters (even Roger Waters loved their cover of "Comfortably Numb"!)

Congrats to whoever made the image for grasping so much legendary music in 1 single image...

PS: in some cases it isn't sure whether we talk about a band or a solo singer.
Isn't Eels basically Mark Oliver Everett with ever-rotating guest musicians?
And while NIN is definitely a band on-stage, in studio I believe Trent Reznor does virtually everything by himself...

After letting my post sit here nearly six years, you wouldn’t know any of those? You really haven’t heard of Madonna, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Doors, Queen, Prince, Radiohead, Cars, Rolling Stones, B-52’s Carpenters, U-2, BeeGees, Talking Head, Eagles, Spoon, Beach Boys, or Cranberries? How about the Pixies? Watch that video link I posted of Pixies with Kim Deal howling when she isn’t playing the bass. She’s still around:
