Ask any expert
You'll get a different reply from each one.At 167 I'm not overweight but I wouldn't know where to start if I wanted to slim down. Some say it's a simple caloric intake vs. calories burned others say the input of obese people doesn't exceed that of average weight. It seems like a challenge that some can meet and other can't if you can't you can take comfort in that many say the health risks of obesity are highly over-rated.

green tea apparently is good for the metabolism. mmmmm. and yummy. drinking tree cups a day is said to burn through 80 calories. also, go sit in an infared sauna! Walk somewhere... someone should create an internet treadmill...perhaps they already have.

Expend more calories than you consume.
Nothing else works. So: Eat less. Exercise more. Theory is simple. Execution--well, that's another matter entirely. |

Hi Jeremy and forum-mates
I am quite new to this site, but I know something about losing weight because I lost nearly 20kg in 4 months about 3 years ago. My main advice is to forget Dr. Atkins or similar style diets and go to see a good doctor. An endocrinologist (I just made up the word, I do not know if it exists :P) or dietist will not only desing a good diet adapted to your lifestyle and person, but also regularly check that it does not affect your health adversely. I lost weight without exercising or without taking pills, so yes, it is possible (if you have enough willpower, that is) Basically, my kind of diet forbid the ingestion of fat/sugar (you know, no fried dishes no french fries no chocolate no candies no icecreams no fast food etc), increased the amount of vegetables and slightly reduced the amount of carbo-hydrates, but I could eat a good deal of pasta and bread. I had to eat a bit more of meat, fish and eggs (proteins). And NO ALCOHOL. Another of the challenges of a diet is going out. You have to try to adapt. What I did was to ask for a salad as starter and then some grilled meat or fish as main dish. No dessert. And then a good espresso. That was it. A perfectly healthy meal. Oh, I suppose that you don't go to discos anymore, but yes... I had to ask for water. The stares of the waiters made me feel like a drug-addict. And something that I have started to do just recently (and I am 25yo). Exercise. As camner said, the majority of weight problems can be solved by eating less and exercising more. But whatever you do, take it easy! It is about your health after all, you should not exchange weight for stress. Farewell, John Last edited by joens : 28 Aug 2003 at 10:15 AM. |

joens, the diet you describe sounds like the kind of diet which could profitably be adopted by everyone, whether losing weight or not!
One thing I've been told is that there is no such thing as a "diabetic diet"; a healthy diet for diabetics is the same thing as a healthy diet for anyone else. |
