Topmail.ie going paid for new members.

I thought this may be of interest the not well talked about email service Topmail will be going paid for new members shortly, as I've only just seen this email come in but for the time being existing members it will remain free but with increased storage.

The message I recieved:
Topmail Upgrade

Dear Customer

In the last few days access to the Topmail service has been hampered by
platform server issues. The situation arose from a server disk error that
affected the mirrored database RAID disks. This was such an unusual occurrence
that we have raised it with the hardware manufacturer. This caused email’s to
back up and as a result were processed very slowly for two days.

We wish to assure you that as a result of our high levels of security and
resilience no emails were lost during this period. This did however result in
emails being delivered considerably slower than normal over the two day period.
The situation has now been corrected and normal service has been resumed.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused during this period

Over the past 12 months we have been working on an upgrade to the existing
Topmail platform which is due to take place on the 1stMarch. There has been
considerable investment in the new platform the benefits of which are outlined
below.

FREE TO EXISTING CUSTOMERS

From the 1st of March 2014 Topmail will be introducing an annual fee to all New
Customers for using the Topmail service.

Topmail intends to honour it’s commitment to provide the service free of charge
to its existing customers on an ongoing basis. Existing customers will continue
to enjoy the service FREE in appreciation of your loyalty and out of respect
for the basis on which you became part of the Topmail family.

The new Topmail service will incorporate increased levels of security and
additional functionality. Our policy of providing an advertisement free service
will be continued on the new platform. Effective from March 1st 2014 new
customers will be charged an annual fee for the Topmail service.

During the upgrade period you will be able to send and receive emails as
normal.

As part of the upgrade existing users will benefit from the following
additional features:

* Encryption: Users will continue to enjoy free Anti Spam & Anti Virus. As
part of the upgrade users will benefit from an encryption option to ensure
increased security for sending sensitive information.

* Multi Device: The existing Topmail webpage is also being upgraded and when
completed it will load and display according to the device being used,
making it mobile and device compatible.

* Increased Storage: Your account storage capacity will be increased to 10
gigabyte. This is the highest of any free webmail services offer.

* Speed: Topmail’s new platform will provide users even faster and more
efficient email.

We will contact you again on the 10th on January to update you on the upgrade
and advise you of any setup changes you may need to make to email clients (e.g.
Outlook, Mobile devices clients etc).

Thereafter, between the 10th January and 1st March, we will contact you on a
regular basis advising you of any changes you may need to make.

As always we would welcome any questions you might have in respect of the
upgrade or any other part of the service.

Please contact us at support@topmail.ie

Yours sincerely

Topmail Support

Not many (who are not members now) will be willing to pay for a service that others receive for free. imho

Not true. Gmail has had 15 GB storage for some time now. A number of other free email services have also had at least 10 GB storage for quite awhile.

It makes one wonder how tuned in Topmail owners are to other aspects of their business, if they don't know basic facts like that

It appears they limit their accounts, at least their new accounts, to Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, India and the United Kingdom. That eliminates a large segment for potential new customers.

Unhappy

I just tried to register and even though I clicked the activate link MY ACCOUNT IS STILL DISABLED!!

Ill try it later and see if they enabled it..........

EDIT:

I got an email reply from support and they said

Hi,

I'm afraid that we are currently unable to accept any new accounts until a planned upgrade has been completed which should be in the next few weeks.

Regards,
Topmail Support

Doesnt make sense since they said STARTING MARCH 1ST no more free accounts. SO THEY SHOULD HONOUR IT NOW!!

I had a seldom used account there, I tried logging in just now (in NY) & got "IP Blacklisted" note. So I guess they are a regional only provider now..
