I can't see the option in FC to set it as the default mail handler.

In "Options/Accounts" you would double/click on your account. After putting in your password you should see the middle button at the bottom says "Set as default email account". That should do it.

(this will set the account you set this in as the default for the mailto: tag but I don't know if it will open in IE or Firefox if that is your default web browser?)

Hi,

I can't get the above procedure to work for me.

I use FF3.0.8 and get as far as Step 5: I get no such message popping up when I paste the javascript line in the address bar.

I have javascript enabled in FF=>Options, I don't know what is going wrong - can anyone help?

Thank you

Steps 3. and 5. would seem to be the critical ones - I'd double check those, especially that the strings "allowRegister..." and the js script got copied and pasted completely. Also, any chance the dialog is hidden behind something?

I used https instead of http and it worked fine. Thanks for the tip!

I wish someone had done this, I see little reason to use an additional piece of software (FastCheck) to open a mailto link in Firefox. I'm glad I saw a blog referencing this, but it should be on the help and wiki as well.

The wiki seems to have changed? New link seems to be:
http://fastmail.wikia.com/wiki/Firefox_3_default_mailto

The link below does not automatically forward to the correct place.

Back in February IIRC, because the old one was getting spammed to death -- on one particularly bad day I squashed over 50(!) spam pages, which the admins then had to come along and delete altogether; a tedious and annoying task for both of us.

It is on the wiki, and has been for three years now -- read the rest of this thread, especially the post below yours which gives the page on the current version of the wiki.

Has anyone gotten this to work in a recent (10, 11, 12) version of Firefox? At step 5 (javascript:...), I get no response when entering the javascript string.

This used to work for me (both the setup procedure and the mailto: behavior) until some point in the recent past. Now, the setup procedure does nothing and clicking on mailto: links results in an infinite loop of opening new tabs (a bug report was entered into the Mozilla bug base in January 2012.

There are more current instructions on the Wiki for setting this up. I see that robert@fm had already said this upthread; I'm repeating it here for any one (else) who missed it as I did when I posted here in April.

Also, since FM's October 2012 interface changes, the dialog presented by FM when you click a mailto: link is misleading. It says "Session Expired" regardless of whether you have any expired sessions or even any sessions at all; it presents an option to select an open session despite having just claimed it had expired; and selecting that session only opens your inbox, not a compose form.

As a workaround, remember that mailto: always (as of 15 Nov '12) requires a new login. If no login form is present in the dialog, click the "Log in a new session" link. Support request (bug) filed.

Update

You now have to enter the javascript in the console by pressing ctrl shift k.
