Why is the mobile app so large?
I was going through my apps (I have a smaller phone, so I'm frequently running low on space) and once again noticed that the Fastmail app is 63.04 MB plus data. It seems like a simple enough app, what does it have that takes up so much space?

Are you sure? The Google PlayStore says it's 22 MB (when installing), this expands to just under 28 MB when installed (before running it for the first time)
For comparison: K-9 Mail, a general (not tied to any specific provider) email application is 6.44 MB plus data (some 50 MB in my case). Are you sure the 63MB you quote is the application only, not app+data? |

You don't say whether this is an iOS or Android device. On iOS 9.2.1, I get:

The Android app is large because it bundles an entire browser engine, known as Crosswalk. Unfortunately there's still a lot of Android 4.x devices out there, and they don't come with the Chromium webview, which we need - the old system webview isn't powerful enough to run the FastMail webapp.
One day, when we can target Android 5 and up, we can use the system webview and slim down the app considerably. Until then, we have to live with it being rather large. (Incidentally, there is a "Crosswalk Lite" variant that I've not yet had chance to investigate properly - I couldn't get it to compile last time I tried. If it works as advertised, it could make the app a lot smaller). |
