One really slow server today
Ouch, server4 was slow as molasses/honey/treacle (pick your least favourite) today affecting some users.
It appears that a change in our frontend proxy was leaving some extra conenctions to backends open, using more processes, which used more memory, which caused swapping, which slowed the machine, causing more connections, using more memory, etc. We do actually have a whole bunch of extra memory to stick into the machine, but since it has been working well for the last couple of weeks, we were waiting until sometime after Christmas to avoid another downtime on the machine after the big one 3 weeks ago. *sigh* Anyway, I think I've tracked down the problem with the proxy, and am working on a fix to make sure it doesn't happen tomorrow.
