New Filestorage System

We've just rolled out the new file storage system. This includes
  • WebDAV access to your filestorage (FTP soon)
  • a new method for specifying websites
  • a cleaner interface to files and directories through the web

You can read all about it in the FAQ at:

http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts/VFS.htm

and

http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts/VFSWeb.htm

I haven't enabled the FTP server again yet, but will do so shortly.

It used to be that you could have a website be public, password-protected (username didn't matter) or private (your own FM username/password was used to log in). It doesn't seem like the last option is there anymore. Am I just missing it?

Thanks

EDIT: oops, I was reading the other FAQ. I see the answer to my question here: http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts...htm#VFSPrivate

Bron,
the FAQ mentions Linux with KDE but for the Gnome users amongst us you can use Nautilus to access the files.
Either enter davs://dav.messagingengine.com/ in the location bar or use the File->Connect to server option to set up the drive. I've tested it a little and it seems to work OK.
I should also add that if you want to mount a webdav share in Linux (either manually or by an entry in your fstab file) you will need to install davfs2, Note that I haven't tried this myself.
cheers,
Bob

  • My Computer
  • My Network Places
  • Add a Network Place - wizard appears - 'Next' through it
  • Internet or network address is: https://dav.messagingengine.com/
  • Enter email address (uname@domain.tld) and password in the dialog that appears
  • Enter a descriptive name (eg., FM Files)
  • Finish - Explorer opens to your FM filespace
  • Play with files!

Thanks. I think I got it wrong initially by trying to connect with http rather than https.

Question logoff?

Did I miss the instructions for logging out of dav.messagingengine.com (using a web browser)?

Close the web browser. It uses HTTP Basic Auth, so it's up to the browser to stop caching the credentials. There's nothing we can do about it, that's how DAV works.

Are you saying that every time you go to that site now it automatically gives you your files without having you login again even after closing your browser? If yes, then the only way I've found, so far, is to restart my pc (winme) to clear the cache windows keeps for that.

If you share your pc with others and don't want them to have access to your files then I think using dav.messagingengine.com is not a secure way to access them.

At least, that's how it's working for me. If anyone knows a way to make it more secure then please post.

Also, Welcome to the EMD Forums

Sherry

Edit: Rob suggests that we use NetDrive instead of the DAV way in a few of his posts. Although I don't know if it can be logged off either???

His Instructions

Pretty much, yes.

Which is why you should be sharing the computer by having different accounts that you log in to (easier with XP, which comes set up this way by default), or you should run a real multi-user operating system

NetDrive allows you to disconnect, map to different windows drive letters, save password (or not) and connect at login/startup. It also works with ftp servers. It's very good.

Thanks for that info Sigg. I'll play around with DAV in windows for awhile longer but reading your post helps me know I'll probably try NetDrive after asking a few more questions on it. (had a few on my mind but lost them sometime after midnight so will have to wait till tomorrow)

It works sweetly in KDE for me. I love it. All my files at my fingertips anywhere in the world. Wonderful.

You know what? I'm going out and purchasing more diskspace.

A few weeks ago I thought of switching to Gmail, now, you've given me one more extra reason to keep paying you guys money. I've been with you for more than 4 years, and I think you guys give one of the best service out there. Best value for money ever!
