know when your email has been read (read receipt services)
http://sentthere.com/ is my favorite. The unique speciality of this service is that you can get the twin benefit of getting to know when your email has been read and also be able to send your emails through email client software such as Outlook Express even though your email service is only POP3/IMAP4 enabled and does not give you SMTP access. It is really possible because you would be using activate.sentthere.com as your SMTP server. Another unique feature is you can make your stamp invisible so that the receipient will not know that the email is being traced. You must download the sentthere utility from its website in order to use this service. I highly recommend this free service
Links of some of the other read receipt services are: http://msgtag.com/home/ http://trackthis.cc/ http://readnotify.com/ http://havetheyreadityet.com/ Please comment on other read receipt services that you know.. Last edited by yuvaraj : 27 Feb 2003 at 05:37 PM. |

This area can get pretty controversial. A lot of us really hate those services and some like them and..well...let the debate begin and keep it polite.

I see this service can be useful when business are involved and we rely on emails.
But also I know that some of my friends and family members may think of this as me nosing around. It can get a bit too much if I want to ignore an email but keep getting "notices" that I am receiving emails, reading them, but not answering them. Kind of Big Brother watching over your shoulder situation here. So I guess it has to do with the individual sending and those receiving the emails. Tony |

I don't think any of them work if the recipient doesn't view the mail with HTML enabled. At least I hope that's the case.

I got an error message when I tried to send an email in text mode using the service of http://trackthis.cc/ This is the error message: The following message was not delivered due to an error. The most common cause of a message delivery error is an invalid Content-Type of the message. The Content-Type of a message determines whether the message was sent with plain, unformated text, or with HTML formating which allows features such as different colors, bold text and pictures. In order to successfully send a message using TrackThis, you must ensure that the message is sent in HTML format. Most newer email software (such as Microsoft Outlook) will automatically send messages in HTML format. If you are not using newer email software OR if you are using a web based email service, please take care to verify that they message type is HTML. Check the options section of your software or email service, or refer to help for more information. If you feel this error was caused by another reason, please forward the message contents located below to: Help@TrackThis.cc Thank you, Your Friends at TrackThis.cc Since, the below services also use similar logic, I think they too would not work either. http://www.postminder.biz/ http://www.returnreceipt.com/ http://readnotify.com/ Since http://havetheyreadityet.com/ uses image which is not supported in text mode, that too would not work! http://msgtag.com/home/ works only when emails are sent by email clients through SMTP server. BUT, http://sentthere.com wins the competition since we can only send emails through the senthere compose window or through the email client with sentthere SMTP server. |

Readnotoriety
(Under the present rules, "readnotify" would probably have been banned for spamming his service...) |

I think http://sentthere.com and http://havetheyreadityet.com are the only free services. Most of the other services provide free service with some limitations and paid service without any limits. Among these services, I have used http://sentthere.com for about 2 years and it is very reliable. But only drawback is you cannot send your email to multiple receipients using sentthere! In that case, I prefer http://trackthis.cc If you can afford to pay for these services, then you have a lot of options to try many services
