I cancelled my AOL Canada account. I was told I could keep my AOL ID and address for 99 cents a month. I now have my AOL address on AOL free mail. The difference between that and AIM mail is that AIM has 2GB amd AOL webmail has 100 MB. I set up an AIM account, separate from my AOL account, just to check it out. I like it, except for the advertising, but I can live with that. Unlike Gmail, it's IMAP. To me that's a huge bonus because of the folders I like to always have at my disposal.

That's brilliant on AOL's part.

You remain listed as a paying subscriber, but you pay $12/year rather than $288 a year or even $60, the previous cheap date.

And using IMAP, you avoid all the bloody ads.

Cheap price to keep a legacy email address.

By allowing you to keep the address, they perpetuate the brand.

Just for the record, the @aim.com addresses I had that were broken, old @aol.com accounts that gave errors on login, now both work.

So they cleaned a bit more up, which is good.

Edit: I was wrong. Webmail login works for all three accounts, but two of them still give a "this account has been cancelled" message when logging into the IMAP server imap.aim.com

Those two AIM.com addresses I had problems with?

They both work in webmail and IMAP now.

And they both recieve mail addressed to @AIM.COM and @AOL.COM.

Wacky.

Sorry me taking this up again.

What do they prefer us to use?

Do they want us to use imap.aim.com or imap.aol.com?

I'm trying to learn opera mail again using imap and it fails me.

Hi, Trew:

I have 4 email clients all using imap.aim.com and everything works fine (yesterday configured the last one of the clients). But I have problems using standard IMAP port (143). Therefore, I instruct them to use SSL connection to the IMAP server and port 993.

Both work for incoming mail.

However, outgoing mail requires smtp.aim.com to envelope authenticate, so using imap.aim.com seems to be consistent.

Thanks for suggesting things. I tested the SSL 993 and that worked too but it says
Quote:
The server's certificate did not match its hostname. Accept?
which I does but it still fails?

So I decided to go back to using imap.aim.com at insecure port 143 cause it is annoying to ahve to make all the extra clicks.

thanks again.

Trew

Couldn't ypur most trusted friend do it while you talk to him or her over the phone? then you could look for sign of it?

Hope others with better insight read this so they get interested in your question.
