SMTP Auth on Android?

I've set up email on an Android phone, the Samsung Exhibit II, but can't send email. I suspect this is because of the same SMTP Auth requirement that I had to work with years ago in setting up my Eudora on the desktop.

Is there a quick way to set up the stock email program (not gmail) on this Android phone to handle SMTP Auth? Any ideas are welcome.

I'm using K-9 mail on Android successfully. I also used the default email client successfully, but didn't like it as much as K-9.
