SMS Verification of new Gmail accounts

Does anyone know how long the SMS verification requirement for new Gmail accounts has been in place?

I don't have a mobile phone, can I sign up?

If you'd like to sign up for a Gmail address, you need to have a mobile phone that has text-messaging capabilities.
If you don't have a phone, you may want to ask a friend if you can use his or her number to receive a code. Also, if you know someone who already has a Gmail address, you can ask them to email an invitation to you.

One of the reasons we're offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse. Spam and abuse protection are two things we take very seriously, and our users have been very happy with the small amount of spam they've received in Gmail. We take many measures to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending their spam messages, getting these messages delivered, or even obtaining a Gmail address (spammers will often use many different addresses to send spam). Sending invitation codes to mobile phones is one way to address this, as the number of addresses created per phone number can be limited.
I am not sure but was it not a long time ago? 2008 April or something.

But this text says it is just a few days ago written the June 15

"Gmail Now Require SMS Text Messages To Activate Accounts

Well, it appears the big G has finally done something to take some extra security measures against spammers or abusive users. At some point within the past few days, Google began requiring newly registered accounts to be verified by an SMS text message to your mobile phone. "

but I am sure of that they had it some year or more ago too but maybe only here in Sweden? Maybe my memory is failing

Sounds like there may still be a use for those invitations after all.

Even invitations have to SMS verify. Sorry.

The problem for me is that the SMS never came to my phone.

So no new Gmail account for my sister's new venture.

yahoo: unlimited email storage
gmail: limited

yahoo: disposable email address feature built in
gmail: plus addressing is a joke for that purpose

kaptitsky, but don't they allow you to do a renewed send request?

Seems odd that one only get one chance?

gmail****** you seems to be very disappointed with Gmail?

Here in Sweden almost everybody use hotmail and gmail most likely as second best but yahoo is practically unknown to most people.

Are yahoo really that good? I do use if cause if works very good with the yahoogroups I am member of.

Can you tell me how to access Yahoo via IMAP4?

I'd be quite interested to know.

I was able to resend the verification while the confirmation screen was up, but once that was out of my browser I found no way to resend the confirmation, and no place to enter the code. It wasn't like I could login with the name and password and be linked again to the confirmation screen with resend option.

So if SMS is down for more than a while, you easily lose the opportunity.
