Publish a home page easily with TiddyWiki

Oh my goodness, this has to be one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. As pointed out on this thread.

http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=47971

TiddlyWiki is a wiki that works in a single page. By using the file storage area, you can have your own wiki simply and easily. Here's instructions.

1. Login to your FastMail account, go to the Files screen
2. Create a directory called "public"
3. Click the Websites button, and share the public folder to a url like http://yourname.fastmail.fm
4. Mount your file storage area to your computer via FTP or DAV
http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts/VFS.htm#VFSDAVFTP
5. Right click on this link: http://www.tiddlywiki.com/empty.html and select "Save target as..."
6. Navigate to your DAV mounted drive, and then into yourname.fastmail.fm/files/public
7. Change the name to index.html and click Save
8. Open windows explorer, navigate to the DAV mounted drive and into yourname.fastmail.fm/files/public
9. Double click on index.html, it should open in Firefox, or Internet Explorer, or whatever browser you have configured
10. Follow the instructions to setup a title, and a default home page
11. Click the Save Changes link at the top right of the page

That's it. If you now go to:

http://yourname.fastmail.fm

You'll see the wiki you saved. To edit your wiki, just follow steps 8 & 9 in the future, and click Save changes to save any changes back for other people to see. I've created a quick example here:

http://robm.fastmail.fm/wiki.html

Very, very neat.

Hum. I'm definitely going to try this. I use PBWiki for personal stuff but I've always wanted to have more control over my wiki and put it where I want it. I've got tons of work to do today but I'm fitting some time in to play with this.

That is very cool. Apparently there are some issues saving with IE under Windows XP. Workaround here.

Also a VERY neat 'Personal Organiser' side project at GTD TiddlyWikki (A GetThingsDone TiddlyWikki).

Why was elie banned? I didn't see anything in their previous posts that would warrant a ban.

Just curious...

It's an html file that utilises java script, css, and html to configure and save itself Killer. All the code runs client side (not server side)

Editing the TiddlyWiki file

I created my own Home Page using TiddlyWiki during the week end. You can see it at naru.mm.st

But I have noticed that I cannot edit the file at the website. I can edit and save it at the web site. I thought the idea of TW is to be able to edit it and save it easily. The edit link is missing on the Tiddlers. Any idea why? Is this a security issue.

Anyway I do not want anyone other than me to be able to edit the page either. How do I set it up so that only I can edit it. How can I do that?

I know I should be asking this question in TW forum. But just trying here any way.

"I can edit and save it at the web site"

Please read this as "I can edit and save in my local disk"

The regular TiddlyWiki distribution is not intended to be editable when on the server. If you search around the TiddlyWiki site you will find other distributions that have been modified to allow this.

As the file cannot be edited online you don't have to worry about security. Of course there is nothing to stop anyone from downloading it and then editing it (which is true for all html files) but they won't be able to upload it back up to your server.

If you want an easy client-side solution use the upload plugin or

http://www.minitiddlyserver.com

The second one requires PHP but is a better solution.

Okay...but is Fastmail PHP-enabled?

Thanks for the insight...MiniTiddlyServer sounds better, but is Fastmail "PHP-enabled"??

I'm going to try without knowing the answer and will post what I find out...

Ok...not possible.

Can't use MiniTiddlyServer. This is addressed in the FastMail FAQ:

"I want to run a PHP/CGI/ASP/etc script/page. Can I do that?

No. The website hosting facility is only designed to host simple static webpages. For scripting and database functionality, you should use a full web hosting provider. "

I'm still in the experimenting stage and would like to stick with FastMail until I feel the need to get a separate hosting service. Kinetic--can you summarize why you think MTS is a better solution? I.e. what are the downsides of using UploadPlugin?
