Just set up a trial account with fastmal and all seems ok so far.
I am working at york St johns university and students often ask me about the best email account to back up the university account.
Does fastmail offer discount for students?

just move your students mail to gusite (they are free for school), which is the best emal hosting on this star, if you don't care much about privacy stuff.

I do not know the latest status. I do know that, in the past, FastMail have been willing to make special arrangements for educational and charity purposes. I would suggest contacting them and asking the question.
