How to send from multiple aliases using Netscape Mail IMAP?

I have recently switched to Netscape for browsing and email. I set up the mail client using the FM help pages, and it worked perfectly. Thanks for useful and easy instructions! Everything syncs like a champ and I can work offline or via the web interface seamlessly-- I am impressed!

One problem: I like to use an alias when I send email to commercial accounts. This is easy to do in the web interface, however I can't figure out how to set this up in the Netscape mail client.

I tried setting up a new account using my alias, however the client won't let me use the same account name (my username) for the server. That's the only account I have on FM.

Is it possible to somehow set up Netscape to send from two different personalities like you can from the web interface? However I like to recieve all my mail under folders at my root account. I would be grateful if someone had a solution to this.

Thanks to everyone at Fastmail for such an outstanding service with outstanding support! Hopefully I can learn enough to someday start contributing back to the discussions and help future newcomers.

Steve

I'm a Mozilla fan, but this should work on Netscape as well. Create a new account, POP3. Make the email address youralias@yourFMDomain.suf. Fill the POP server with something bogus. Do not set it to check mail at the beginning or at an interval. Set the SMTP server there to be the FM smtp server with authentication. That should do what you want.

I tried that, but with no luck. I set up a new POP account under Netscape, but it automatically uses the SMTP server from my main IMAP account (www.fastmail.com) -- I tried fiddling with all sorts of settings, but to no avail-- will not send via POP acct.

There is the option under "Outgoing SMTP Servers' to add additional servers manually, via advanced options.

This, though, asks for a port number. What do I need to put in there? And how does the POP account know to use the SMTP server? Why does the POP account try to use the IMAP server in the first place? (www.fastmail.com) -- The mail accounts and the outgoing servers seem to be kept as separate entities by Netscape.

I don't know much beyond the basics when it comes to servers, ports, and such. Thanks again for the help.

You can setup "identities" which are like personalities, by manually editing the prefs.js file, see here.

Why does it matter to you which SMTP server is used?

You cannot actually send from a POP account, only from a SMTP server. Setting up dummy POP accounts will allow you to use different "From" addresses in your email even though the emails will be sent using your default SMTP server.

IT WORKS!! IT WORKS!!

Sometimes too much fiddling gets one in trouble...

Thank you all for your input-- I am now able to send mail via my alias using the Netscape 7.0 Mail client. I'm going to paraphrase some of your answers here in my summary of how to do this exactly. Hopefully this helps other Netscape Mail users.

Initially set up your primary IMAP account. The Fastmail help pages do a great job explaining exactly how to do this.

Then setup a new POP account, but make sure you enter a bogus POP mail server (mail.bogus.com works for me), just to be safe. Use your alias as your email address.

Once finished, go to 'edit' then 'mail & newsgroups account settings' from the main toolbar. Choose 'outgoing server(SMTP)' and click 'advanced.' Here you'll see that a second SMTP server was created when the POP account was created. Choose the new server name (bottom of list), and click 'edit.' Notice that it lists your alias as the user name. This will not work. Simply change the user name to your primary FM user name, make sure 'use name and password' is checked, and it works like a dream.

I sent test emails from both the web interface and the Netscape Client to a third party email service I use, and the headers were free of any reference to my actual username.

Bonus: Under the "copies & folders" options for the alias POP account, you can set up the account to place sent messages in your 'sent items' folder under your IMAP account--- thus, all items you send via the client will be syncronized as well.

Any questions on this, please feel free to ask me here.

Glad you got it to work. Mozilla is the same way, but for some reason, I thought Netscape lets you define a IMAP server during the setup process of an accounr, rather than having to go through the Edit. Mail & News prefs.

yes, I erased and re-created the POP account many times thinking I may have missed the server option-- but it's just not there. You have to 'go manual.' .

Another way to do this is to add dummy news accounts, its a little cleaner as it doesn't create any folders.
