That would be possible, yes, but it would mean more steps are necessary for recovery. What you would be talking about is finding a new host for your DNS, and then directing this to your new mail service. Even should you decide to, again, combine your mail service and DNS together, recovery involves some additional complexity.

I take your point about "skin in the game", and I actually pay a small amount to my DNS hosts for 5-nines reliability. There is some value in using a specialist DNS management organization over a mail service that dabbles in DNS support. I am a firm believer in the "best of breed" principle.
