Potsdam, Germany

Is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and is located on the Havel River, about seven miles southwest of Berlin. As of 1997, it had a population of 138,268.

As a city, Potsdam has existed since the 13th century. From 1660, Potsdam gained renown as residence of the Prince Electors of Brandenburg. The actual development of Potsdam into a royal residence began in 1713. Potsdam is famous for its churches, notably, the Church of St. Nicholas, Holy Ghost Church and the Garrison Church.

Potsdam owes its expansion as prestigious residence of the Hohenzollern monarchs to Frederick the Great. The creations of his reign still define the character of the city. The world-renowned Sanssouci Palace and Park were built during his reign. Other attractions include the New Palace, architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Charlottenhof Palace and the Chinese Tea House.

UNESCO has declared the Cecilienhof Palace, with its memorial to the Potsdam Conference (July 17 to August 2, 1945), as a historical monument. Potsdam is also home of the Institute for Climate Impact Research.
