I didn't say anything about the pros or cons of using discard rules. Only one place that icon appears in the webmail interface if you define a discard rule.

So on that subject, does that mean you
never specify a spam discard threshold (Spam Protection's Permanently delete) and look at
everything whose spam score is greater than the spam threshold possibly filtering it into it's own special folder?
