I forgot two providers I've trialled recently in my original list in the first post:

Runbox:
  • Pros
    • Very fast IMAP access from my location (I'm less than 300 km away from them as the crow flies)
    • Very friendly and responsive support (regulars here will know several Runbox reps from the Runbox forum)
  • Cons
    • Stale. The newest post on the Runbox development blog is from May 19, 2011, and that was to report a bugfix. The last post about a real new feature is from November 2010, or almost 1½ years ago. That spells stale in my book.
    • Runbox has had its share of outages, as a simple search on the Runbox forum will reveal. To be fair, I haven't heard about an outage or a similar problem in a long time. Cynics will say that's because no one uses Runbox anymore, but I will say that in my limited testing, they proved completely reliable.
Recompiled.net:
  • Pros
    • Friendly support, albeit too terse, bordering on unhelpful at times. Not superhumanly fast response times like LuxSci and John Capo (of Tuffmail fame), but fair.
    • Fast IMAP access from here, because they put me on a new server they were setting up in Moscow (a first for me!)
  • Cons
    • Poor, unstructured documentation on web site
    • Uses self-signed certificates, untrusted by web browsers and mail programs. There is a blog post written by the owner (?) of recompiled.net, arguing for the use of self-signed certificates, and I do see his point, but regardless, it can be a bit annoying to have to click through the warnings
    • Not a dedicated mail hosting service; originally a shell hosting service, hence the mail hosting is pretty basic
Note: I've updated my first post with links to all my subsequest update posts to make it easier to find the complete list of providers by going through the list of update posts.
