Basic HTML" -- Standard view is also HTML, just not basic.
This isn't a one-off problem; I have had GMail in the past trying to force Basic HTML on me, and problems with this mode have been
recently discussed.
By the way, EMD covers many email service providers; for those which have their own forum(s) here, such as
