I'll give that a try just because I'm stubborn and want to get to the bottom of this. I've moved on to aquamail and it's going great and has more IMAP configuration options as they related to IDLE.

I get quite a few spam messages in my inbox and they are all very similar in content. Everytime I get these messages I mark them as spam but despite this I still seem to get the same type of messages...
