In the old interface, there are quick filter links for viewing messages in a folder:

Filter: None Unread Flagged

I use the "Unread" filter quite frequently to find the messages I haven't gotten...

Yeah, I agree with hadaso that the best solution would be to have the Compose link in a common place on all pages rather than just as a part of the Folders list.

That said, if it does remain a part...

The Compose link with the pen blends into the folder list. Please provide something like a darker background in the default styling so that this link contrasts better with the folder links below it.
