Feature Request: SSH Access To Files

Geir,
How about giving us access to our files via SSH?

From the preface of SSH - The Secure Shell:
"Network security is big business. But there is a small, unassuming, yet robust solution many big companies have missed. It's reliable, reasonably easy to use, cheap, and available for most of today's operating systems. It's SSH, the secure shell."

I support this request 100%!

I think Fastmail uses webdav for this.

"WinSCP is an open source SFTP client for Windows using SSH. Its main function is the safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer."

I asked our sysops at Linpro about SSH access for users some time ago, and their short answer was: "No."

Their long answer was: "It's a security risk (for Runbox)."

I can relay the tip about scponly, anyway.

Geir,
Thanks anyway.

Just curious, why do you want SSH access?

I do not want SSH access

Rich,
I never even thought about gaining shell access to the Runbox servers, even though that is what my request amounted to.

What I wanted was to be able to use sftp protocol for file transfers and maybe tunnel a few things via ssh.
How you would do any of those things without shell access is a mystery even to me.

It really did seem like a good idea at the time...

Sorry to have wasted anybody's time with this one.

Regards,
Edafe

P.S: I still think that official support for MailTo clients would be a good idea...

It's not really a waste of time. Sometimes when a person asks for one feature and it can't be done it's a good idea to ask why they wanted to do it because there maybe another do-able way to achieve the same goal.

I wrote the Mailto Client for Windows but unfortunately Windows is the only OS easily availabe to me. I might be setting up another PC with Linux but that's probably going to be a couple of months off still. Been kind of busy lately.

I know you said "official support" but that's probably not an options anytime soon just because of the amount of work Runbox has on it's list already. What we need is another one or two Runbox users who could put something together if they had the time and interest.

Regards,
Rich

All I can say is that I would appreciate it a lot if someone could provide us all with a solution to fill in the MailTo client gaps.

Especially since the skills required would probably be less than trivial...

And thanks for what you have done, Rich.

Regards,
Edafe

http://www.webdav.org/

There is mod_dav for apache.

Fastmail.fm and gmx.net are using it.
It's a nice feature. I don't expect it to be free.
