Based on the Pingdom reports, this looks similar to the last two outages, albeit shorter. It appears both MX servers were inaccessible for around 15 minutes which, again, means that standard mail backup I use for clients would not have been working, and some mail delivery delayed over an hour. If the delay was only the roughly 15 minutes of the network outage, it would be livable. With this third recent outage delaying some mail over an hour, and no apparent attempt to ensure the separation of the MX servers, I think I must now look for an alternative way to ensure mail availability for clients whose businesses are reliant on email.
I am interested in ideas anyone might have for ensuring mail delivery to a backup mail service during outages of all MX servers, short of a disruptive conversion away from FastMail. |
Can't remember anymore when I had any downtime with my second provider Tuffmail. Or am I comparing apples with oranges now? ;) Bigger is not always better.

Not thrilled with Fastmail's reliability lately. I wonder what is going on behind the scenes? Since they moved datacenter locations, I feel like they've taken a small step back in reliability.
|
The inability to avoid a single point of failure for all MX servers really puzzles me. I wish they would explain why they are unable to resolve this.

Advance notice: 12am-6am EDT Oct 5, 6 and 7 - our web interface may be slightly slow but no other impact expected. Our network provider is performing substantial upgrades to their network to improve reliability and mitigation against the recent outages. |

Slightly slow? About ten minutes between pressing 'send' and it actually sending. |
