Need help with Thunderbird configuration

Is there some kind of "cookbook" approach somewhere for configuring Thunderbird to be able to access multiple "personalities"? I'm really confused about whether Thunderbird accesses the personalities or the Fastmail mailboxes.

Help would be appreciated.

I assume you are only using Fastmail within Thunderbird and want to know how multiple identities work.

Briefly, the folder list you see in the main Thunderbird screen is independent of identity. This folder list is just a mirror of what you see through the web interface.

In Thunderbird, select 'Tools'/'Account Settings', click on the top Fastmail related line on the left hand side and you will see 'Manage Identities' on the bottom right. Click on that.

The main things you can define for each Identity are
  • Email Address (as seen by your recipient)
  • The signature to be added to the bottom of emails
  • The folder to be used to stored sent emails for this Identity (can be on the Fastmail server or a local folder)
  • Any automatic BCC you want for emails
  • Whether to compose emails in plain text or HTML
If you want to control the folder for incoming mails, based on identity or otherwise, this is not done in Thunderbird. You need to work out the appropriate rules and define them in the web interface (or look at plus addressing, such as MyName+MyIdentity@fastmail.fm).

There are a number of details, but hopefully this will get you started.
