This forwarding service is interesting
 

1. you don't need to create the alias by hand, just write to the address, the alias will be created automatically.
2. you can reply from the alias as well to hide your real email address.

Email forwarding services seem to be popping up all over--I thought email forwarding was supposed to be dead! This could be a useful service, but the proof is in the performance or lack thereof--I have not used it so can't say anything about that. One problem with these services where you create addresses on the fly is how do you keep track of all the email addresses you are using? I find that sometimes I need to do something like check on an order I placed maybe last year and even with a limited number of addresses it is often a guessing game. Frankly, with Gmail's spam filtering being so good I almost never see one in my Inbox and if I do I can eliminate it quite quickly by telling Gmail. I do see some false positives in Gmail's Spam folder, but for me it is only maybe five or six a month. I just check the folder on occasion and it is good. I'm not sure why, but I am getting very little Spam these days. I just checked and my Gmail Spam folder only contains seven items for the last month (they get automatically deleted after 30 days).

No need. just click "reply" from your email client (such as gmail, thunderbird).

Interesting. I use the similar SpamGourmet service, mostly when I fill out a paper list of email addresses, like for a band newsletter or something. I can also just use 'whatever@' my own domain, but sometimes I don't want to.

This is an old Spamgourmet feature, but it was off by default. Presumable erine has made it mandatory because rewriting the "From" header also solves the DMARC problem with forwarding. Everything leaving the server, in either direction, will have the erine domain in its header.


The creator of erine wrote: "I was a strong Spamgourmet user for years, before its discontinuation". I haven't used it recently but SG does appear to be up at the moment.


The normal use case for this service is that you type these addresses into web forms. In that case you expect to get an incoming email of some sort before you need to send an outgoing email. You can just search your archive for that.

With SG there was also an account stats page that listed every address used.

It is back. The original owner/creator died from a horrible sickness. Then his nephew or cousin or maybe even his son took over. For a while (I'm not sure how long exactly) registration and creation of new email address wasn't available. Now, all is. I know that new email addresses can be created, but I'm not sure (but highly undoubtful) if a new user can register. I haven't tried creating another account to see, but only because I don't need another one.

Dunno. Never heard of it, or looked for anything like SG. In fact, I think I didn't even 'searched' for a similar service, that particular one was recommend to me..

While I wouldn't assume that most (hopefully any?) people use these free forwarding services for any email of value, I am always skeptical of hobby projects.

I certainly don't want to discredit the good intentions of smart, generous people, yet nothing is free. So what are these developers getting out of these services?
