Restore from Backup

I just realised that I don't understand how the FM BACKUP utility works. Maybe someone can explain.

Here is what happened. Somehow I accidentally deleted my inbox. I work on the web interface using POP.. The only way I could think of (with help from the forum) recovering the email was to transfer the contents of the TRASH folder to my Inbox. As I hadn't emptied my trash folder for a long time this meant transferring 17K messages, including, of course lots of real trash. Then I thought, maybe I could restore the Inbox via the backup utility so I ran it. and got a RESTORED folder with a folder tree, but no Inbox The first folder was labelled 20161005T... and contains 24K of messages and seems to be identical to my restored Inbox - though I cannot check properly.

I had thought that the Backup only worked on files which had been permanently deleted (from the Trash), but it doesn't seem to be so.

Any explanations would be very welcome.
