FastMail.fm Wins!

I need to deal with e mail on the web, but I prefer to use an e mail client at home. I use multiple e mail accounts for different purposes.
When Yahoo announced their new fee structure I decided to start looking around. I wasn't happy with what I was seeing out there these days. The pickings were slim.
After checking out a few and rejecting them all because they didn't quite work I stumbled on FastMail.fm. It was free, it was on the web, and it was on that strange thing called IMAP.
I asked questions and got really quick responses from Jeremy. I was impressed. :)
Suddenly, AMEX announces the demise of usa.net. Free is no more, but I wasn't about to pay for usa.net or Yahoo when FastMail.fm did a lot more for a lot less.
I grouped my accounts here and I'm considering bringing the domain here when I get the chance to absorb what I need to do. Jeremy also offered to help! Gee, that's just like the service I got on Yahoo and my ISP (whose mail service I avoid like the plague!)
This is a great service and worth every cent.

Heh... I'm trying to convinence all of my friends to use fastmail.fm
Especially with their no AD, no SPAM(Usually I don't really care about this), and IMAP, POP3 service. Also, their secure SSL option.

Too good to be true.

Yet another fan

I always said that I'd never pay for email. Why bother? I just use it for school, friends and family.

Then the quality of free email went downhill...quickly. And if you complain...well, you're getting it for free! What do you expect?

So when I finally decided that I needed a quality email account for the lowest price possible, I came straight to FastMail. I had a free account, and loved it...it was almost never down, and when it was (once that I can recall), we were sent emails acknowledging and apologizing for it! What a shock...

I upgraded to a $9.99/yr yahoo account and a Member account at fastmail. Then I read that soon they'll be implementing file storage, bookmarks and calendars (which is the only reason I upgraded my yahoo account in the first place), so just upgraded to Enhanced membership! This is a great account...especially love the "bounce" button.

Just another 'thanks' from a satisfied customer,

Kimberly

Another satisfied user

I guess I'll post my 2 cents worth about Fastmail. I've been using it for a few months now and couldn't be happier. I upgraded mine and my husband's account to Member status and also have another Member account for use when signing up on the web for various things ("junk" account.) Since Yahoo and Amexmail have pulled their shenanigans, I am upgrading my account to Full level and paying in advance for two year's service! I have been reluctant to pay for any type of web service in advance after getting burned by an ISP after paying for a year's service, but my gut instinct is that Jeremy and Rob will go the extra mile to keep Fastmail going now and in the future. I am truly impressed with their service and want to support them as much as I can.

Fastmail is just amazing. About 6 months ago, I started looking for an email replacement to defunct Visto. I looked for months and months, and couldn't find anything worth subscribing to. Even for free. On Hotmail, I was receiving 99% spam. Yahoo itself looks like a spam page  ; most have a tiny storage...
I had a long list of features I required from an email provider, but none of them reached 20% of my requirements :(.

Then, I found Fastmail.
Almost all my requirements were filled, and the only ones missing where on their way (I want DAV!!!).
I immediately subscribed as a guest account, to give it a try. The 'try' didn't last long... I became addicted! Needless to say, I soon upgraded to an enhanced account.
The automatic spam filters get rid of virtually all spam, and Fastmail has the richest rule engine I know of for a web mail: you can write your own scripts!

Over the 2 or so months I’ve been using it, I can say I have been impressed by the performance and possibilities: opening Fastmail and checking a couple emails is for me faster than opening Outlook… And the Fastmail team keeps on giving us new features all the time :)… I particularly love the rules and the new anti-spam and anti-virus features!

All in all, with Fastmail, you get your mail, all your mail, and nothing but your mail!
This is the first web service I have paid for in about 8 years of internet use, but I’m glad I did!

More Fastmail

One thing I was always certain of was that I would never ever ever pay for an internet e mail service. Well damn I just paid my $19.95 and became a member of Fastmail. Some things you just can't do without!!!

VinceS 7th April 2002 04:42 PM

After searching and signing up for a couple of free services, I was left wanting more. POP just did not cut it for me--I need to access my mail from multiple computers, and I was spoiled by the IMAP access my college had provided for me. My Hotmail account lasted about a week before being spammed into submission, and few others provided the IMAP access I really needed.

Then I stumbled across emailaddresses.com and the Fastmail forum. After seeing how ridiculously quickly Jeremy and Rob responded to questions and technical issues and made necessary hardware upgrades, and looking over the list of features, I felt confident forgoing the free account and spending 19.95 for a full one.

The IMAP access is faster than any other service that I have used, the web interface is clean, efficient, and blazingly fast, and the feature that allows me to use anyalias@myusername.mydomain.com and file e-mail into the appropriate folders is just genius. And of course, the best feature of all, the "bounce" button, is a feature that every e-mail service should have. Fastmail has every feature that I wanted and much more!

Needless to say, the only regret that I have is that I didn't sign up for 2 years!

Thanks for all the great work, J/R!

its like being in a email family

i'm just glad that unlike most email providers,
fastmail really does have a family of active members.

its almost like a community where everyone shares and helps each other, so it saves time of the administrators n helps them to know how to make fastmail really cater to the masses.

plus the administrators are also actively involved with the members comments/opinions.

this is way too cool!

:) :) :) :) :) :)

I've never really been happy with web-based e-mail providers because there always seems to be a drawback no matter which service you use.

But FastMail has the right attitude. It appreciates what people want from an e-mail provider. It's designed to be easy to use, functional, reliable and professional.

Here you have people committed to making an excellent service along with a whole bunch of users who want to help achieve that goal! And that's got to be a recipe for success!

Thanks Jeremy and Rob! :D

mentiro 10th April 2002 04:55 PM

The combination of an attentive staff (Thanks Jeremy and Rob) along with a slick interface, tons of features, IMAP support, reasonable pricing, etc. made the change to Fastmail an easy one. I had been looking for a new e-mail provider since Yahoo was discontinuing its POP3 access. The same day that I discovered Fastmail.FM was the day I paid to become a Full member. Granted, that was only Monday, but I am already a devoted member! Great service! I hope that as fastmail grows and grows, that the service can still be so good and prices so reasonable! Thanks for the first e-mail service that I actually like!

I like Fastmail very much. Of all the online web mail
services I have ever tried, Fastmail is the friendliest
for users of the Arachne browser for MS-DOS.

Fastmail is definitely the BEST

l have used heaps of free emails which I had setup all to forward to my hotmail account but one by by one all of them made both email forwarding and Pop access premium services and I was compelled to discontinue using them. The latest being the shock of such a big company as yahoo. A few others closed down altogether.

From my experience Fastmail is definitely the best. I am pretty impressed with the Fastmail service. It is undoubtably the BEST in the market today and the one-time fee Memeber package is value for money with a whole heap of invaluable services. If only they had an option to view all the folders at a glance too.

MikeL 18th April 2002 07:43 AM

Hi, all:

I just wanted to join the chorus as a new and VERY satisfied FastMail member! I signed up for a Guest account last week (Wed., I think), and after one day, decided to upgrade to Member. The single feature that sold me (though there are plenty more to love, and I'm discovering new ones daily) was the subdomain. I've gone in and changed all of my mailing lists to use my subdomain, with a different prefix for each one, and when I give my email address to a website, I do the same thing. Now, if someone sells my email address, I can tell who did it, and I can cut off any email to that address which doesn't come from the source I initially gave it to. The ability to use IMAP at home, and web access elsewhere, is incredible; I never knew what I was missing as an Amexmail "customer". To think that if they hadn't decided to start asking for $30/year, I might never have discovered FastMail!

Cheers,
Mike

I agree ... I really owe a debt of gratitude to Onebox. If they hadn't started charging, I would never have found my way to your absolutely terrific service! :D

Jeremy & Rob (and everyone else involved), you've really got something to be proud about here. It's an oasis in a desert full of defunct, dying, and suddenly-overpriced e-mail services, and it comes complete with one of the friendliest message boards I've ever encountered! I certainly hope that you're enjoying putting all this together as much as we're enjoying being a part of it!

It's the thousand little things

It's the thousand little things that make fastmail really cool.

Ever been annoyed that someone sent you a huge word document that would take you ages to download and had they zipped it it would only be a fraction of the size?

Go to the web interface and you can download attachments in a compressed format if you want!!

Just one of the MANY MANY features.

- Spam assasin gives you virtually spam free e-mail even if you let other accounts that normally get loads of it forward mails to fastmail.
- Mails get scanned for viruses in the paid accounts (if you so choose) so you have little to no problems with viruses.

Everything is as user configuarable as you want it but is also extremely easy and fast to use at the same time.

What sold fastmail for me was the server side sieve filtering, spam assasin, virus checking, a large space for storing mails (and if that's not enough you can buy more) and of course IMAP(!)

The other thing is the support from the developers. It is just so fantastic and when you start using fastmail you are not left alone. You become part of a whole community of fans.

There is never a second that I have regretted paying for an enhanced account.

My $0.02 regarding fastmail.

I have been using Fastmail for about 4-5 months now, and about a month back, I upgraded my account to a Full one. I'm extremely impressed with the service, and although I do not have much words to praise, this posting is to show that all this effort is really really appreciated.

Thanks a lot. :)

Hitch re. FastMail - no free POP3

Searching for email to replace Yahoo!, I found this forum & all the glowing testimonies to FastMail. I went to FastMail's site, read the materials - and, found it didn't make the grade. The free level of service doesn't provide POP3, which I consider essential.

*) I need my email to be free.
*) It will be continual inconvenience, if I need to log in somewhere on the web, to collect my email.

Unless I'm mistaken, using IMAP requires logging in at the FastMail site to retrieve/review email.

So this one didn't meet my needs.

spiderman 26th April 2002 06:39 AM

You don't need to use the web site with IMAP: only configure your account details in Outlook Express, Outlook or any other client application that supports IMAP, and you don't need to use the web at all...

SM

revfordham 26th April 2002 07:31 AM

Thank you, spiderman!

Thanks for the info!

I've never had any cause to use/learn about IMAP, so I wasn't clear on it. I thought it was the same as (part of?) the website email methods. Guess it's back to school for me,...! I should be able to figure out the IMAP setup without too much problem. I just wasn't clear that it was a remote download protocol for email retrieval via Outlook Express, etc.

spiderman 26th April 2002 08:31 AM

You should find all the info you need there:
https://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqpart...ExternalAccess

They tell you how to configure about a dozen different clients!

FastMail is the best service to date...

Hi all,

I would like to give my "thumbs up" to the fastmail mail service. I registered on this site after reading another testimonial in the Lockergnome newsletter and I have not regretted it since.

Apart from having a fast and blazing mail service, the additional features feature offered by the folks at fastmail have convinced me that this is the best mail service that I have ever used in the last three years.

Keep it up, Fastmail folks :)

I tried FastMail as a Guest for a week or two, then I upgraded to a Full membership. I love IMAP, the web client is really fast, and FastMail is one of few email providers to offer HTTPS (SSL) access to a web client. I'm completely satisfied.

New Convert!

Whoops, first made this a new thread and then realized that there was a dedicated sticky. Oh well.

Hehe, go Fastmail! I finally realized how important that "fast" part of fastmail is to me when I went and tried to log on to myrealbox on my old 56k softmodem that doesn't work too well (read: 28.8 kbps connects). Well, it takes forever to load. I also found that their images aren't cached locally for some reason, so every time I go to a different page it reloads the images. So, the mostly text/form based interface of Fastmail came through very nicely, so as soon as I can scrounge up enough money for the $15 registration fee, I'll be enrolling as a standard member :) Until then, I'm going to make the slow transition away from myrealbox (and hopefully this will be the *last* mail transition).

Keep up the good work guys.

Go Fastmail go!

Yes sirree! Go Fastmail go!
Have tried & liked the free service account & have now opened a full account for a parish of mine. It's not much but every little effort will help to give MSN & Yahoo a run for their money (Lord knows how they could afford to be a bit more generous!)
Thumbs up Fastmail!

OK, I've had enough of this blathering, and touchy feely sweetness and goodness about FastMail!!

Umm, guess that takes care of that.

FM is cool

I converted when Yahoo cut pop access. I only wish I would have looked harder before I even signed up with Yahoo--fastmail has everything and I love the imap+web access. It rocks.

Very happy with FM and recommending all my friends that have $15 to sign up. Great for students graduating/leaving university.

Thumbs Up FM

The Turning Point:

About 5 days ago now I think I just snapped I finally had enough of my Hotmail inbox fulling up with spam and my Yahoo messages no longer being forwarded through to OE. I was up late that night and started trolling the internet for my next (all encompassing) email site. Although there were hundreds to choose from, I honestly thought there would be more. I am afraid the night was to become even longer.

Fastmail.fm came to notice a few times, as well as a few others and finally started to compare what each offerred in terms of the basic functions I was after. This included forwarding and POP access primarily, but price was also an issue. Before this experience I would have said that it is my right to have free email and why would I pay when I get it for free. I had contemplated paying, but recurring fees were a turn off when paying the equivalent Australian dollars (it effectively doubles the US$ price).

I would like to note that at this point I remember reading some of these postings on this forum prior to joining and thought this sounds like the "Mutual Admiration Society". "Jeremy and Rob you are fantastic........" etc etc. I did wonder what was going on, are these guys rock stars?

The Decision:

It was a Saturday morning now at 4am now and it was time to commit. I wasn't going to bed until I had achieved something. I think I chose FM based on the forwarding function (Yahoo was still a sore point); all the other host of functions that I perused on the FM pricing table and the $14.95 once off cost was acceptable. At the last minute though I thought why not get the $19.95 a year deal and if i want to change next year I can always drop. By doing this as well I got myself a very nice 6 letter login name. I was set the money was paid and I started to explore my new 'toy".

Big Kids.......:

I've got to say I am one of these people that when I buy a computer game I just start playing and don't bother with the instructions. Learn on the fly. It is pretty haphazard, but you can usually get yourself out of trouble eventually. I was the same on FM. I saw the rename thing and thought, yeah I'll try that. Mistake one for me. Think before you act and read the print. I chose a name that I had reservations about straight away then found out about the one change only deal. Danger Will Robinson Danger!! I thought this was going to end in disaster until I saw that FM actually had a support email address.

The Support:

I formulated a very polite email playing up the "paid my money" aspect, in the grim hope of a reply. I was about to hit the sack thinking I would get a reply in a few days at best, when I get the reply saying "no problem the rename setting is reset". I was dumbstruck this is not normal. On top of this and prior I was trying to find a more suitable name when I inadvertantly registered the name I was after under a seperate account which i did not pursue. I thought that FM must have me on the "not financially viable" list by now but thought I harass them anyway to get this other name I was after. I hit the hay that time thinking it was not physically possible for me to continue at that point. Next day though I found my newly named account waiting for me. Wallaaa Problem solved once again. I did have only one other hassle, that being with my SMPT settings on OE but resolved that after properly reading the FM FAQ section. Read those FAQ's properly.

My Testimonial:

As you can gather I am now a committed customer. FM has everything you want and more. Including a few things you sometimes forget about - like Reliability and Support. As for the cost I would gladly pay my money again, even more for the service and product that I have received in 5 days. As for competitors I can speak from experience that there aren't many peers for FM out there. If you read this and you are thinking about going with FM just do it, you won't regret it. By the way Jeremy and Rob you are rock stars.

My only questions now are:

1. Where can we buy shares (stock)?
2. What city is FM based in?
3. How do your Wives/GF's put up with the long hours?
4. When are we going to see FM Cola?

Thanks
CJ

FASTMAIL GETS THE THUMBS DOWN.

I know it's superfast, fuctionality centered rather than graphics centered and so on and so forth, but what feels like a big, fat GRAPEFRUIT up my ******* is when I get lots of emails from my friends saying they were blocked out of fastmail because their emails were misinterpreted as spam by fastmail.

What's the point of an awesome email service when I CAN'T RECIEVE ANY EMAILS?

No point at all. But it seems to me that the right answer is to figure out what went wrong, rather than simply rant about it. Can you give us any details about your friends' emails that were deflected? Do you have rules in place that might be doing the misinterpreting? What level user are you (Guest, Member, Full, or Enhanced)?

Cheers,
Mike

The "Perfect" E-mail for Me

Ok, here's another testimonial....and since this is my first time in this forum, nobody can accuse me of being a "plant"

I had switched free e-mails from Juno to Yahoo because - since my old job had me travelling a lot, I liked being able to check my e-mail on the road. I also liked Yahoo's POP access - it was cool to be able to download my e-mail, read offline, compose, and resend. When Yahoo! announced that it was discontinuing its POP access, I tried composing/responding online, but I hated spending time online. Plus, I have tons of e-mail addresses, and wanted to begin consolidating.

I actually found out about Freemail through the E-mailaddressesdotcom web site, and was tempted, but fought the temptation. Luckily, however, I signed on, and found that the web interface was, well, simple - took a little getting used to, but could navigate easily. IMAP took some getting used to, but luckily, since I use Calypso, I could get the same features that I had in Yahoo! (Plus, download times are *much* faster than Yahoo! POP)

Eventually, I broke down and purchased the $15 Member, mostly for the extra storage space. However, the cool thing is that if you need only a small amount of space, you can purchase it. If you need extra bandwidth, you can purchase *that* as well. It's almost like making your own e-mail service.

I am so grateful, and gradually, I'm switching everything over to my new fastmail address. (I'll still use Yahoo! for lists and for people who forward me annoying virus updates :D ). Thanks, Fastmail, for providing an excellent service!

Thanks again Fastmail!

- p.s. can we hope to have a feature which can tell how much space is taken in various folders?

Fastmail is better than sliced bread

I've had a lifetime of experiences disappointing software and technical support from other email services. I am absolutely delighted to have found Fastmail, with it's straightforward interface, reliable service, and wonderful tech support.

The user groups are wonderful, but I'm totally surprised when Jeremy & Rob jump in to solve problems. (My only problems have been with the client software, not Fastmail, but they still offered their help) I don't know how they do it.

They have earned my loyalty and my upgrade to a paid membership. Thanks guys!
